Dressed to the Nines

Whether you have a family sized walk-in or a tiny cupboard to house your clothes, shoes and accessories, use these simple guidelines to maximize your storage, save time and stay sane!

1. Garment Grouping

Biggest time saver and the only way to manage a large wardrobe. House items by type: all work shirts together, skirts, trousers, casual tops, jeans, gym clothes etc.

2. Colour coding

Colour code within your groups. Takes no longer to put items away but saves so much time getting ready. Light to dark is easiest on the eye. Be sure to separate navy and black with multi-coloured items. Or tie a ribbon on coat hangers holding navy items. Particularly important in poorly lit spaces.

3. Heel Appeal

Wall racks are one of the best ways to keep shoes organised. Each pair is visible, there's plenty of airflow and shoes can be quickly and easily matched to outfits. The racks are simple to put up and can be added to or taken away as needed.

4. Cool Jewels

Give jewellery its own space near your clothes. Separate precious and dress pieces, then separate into gold, silver and other colours. For small items use drawers. Clear jewellery cases are perfect for quick and easy access.

5. Show Off

Display scarves, ties, bags and other accessories so you can see them. Visibility ensures use. Any type of vertical storage is a huge space saver. To store handbags vertically, use moveable dividers. This protects them as well as giving you easy access.

6. Don't Go Green!

Avoid mould by utilizing open style shelving. Use a dehumidifier, or non electronic alternatives like silicon or powdered products. Check and renew regularly.

7. Hats Off

Protect dress hats by storing them in their original boxes with a photo on the front. Or use large clear hat boxes. Caps need to be hung on a specially designed rack attached to a wall, back of door or similar narrow area.

8. Reflections

Your wardrobe needs to reflect your lifestyle. If you spend 50% of your waking time at work, 15% going out, 10% at the gym, 10% gardening, 10% shopping and 5% at the coffee shop, ensure your wardrobe mirrors this.

9. Hang Ten

Inappropriate coat hangers will destroy your clothes and cost you money. Buy quality wooden hangers with wide, smooth finishes. They hold weight and do not tangle. For skirts & trousers use clip hangers and multi level if you are short on space. Ensure all clothing is hung facing the same way.

HOT TIP!! Keep an ‘Out' box next to your wardrobe. When you discover items you can live without (repairs you won't do, ill fitting clothes, shoes that hurt, jewellery and accessories you are tired of) put them straight into the ‘Out' box. As soon as it's full, drop it off at your local charity
