Christmas Clarity

Dreading Christmas at your place? How will you possibly get everything done in time? Minimise the craziness of Christmas by being that little bit more organised this year.

Out with the Old

Amid even the loudest cries of ‘no presents' you know you'll always receive something. Make a list for those die hard present givers so your new stuff isn't merely unwanted clutter! Make room for new things coming into your life by de-cluttering before the presents start rolling in. Get rid of old clothes, toys, books, CDs anything which no longer serves you. You might even find some things good enough to re-gift!

Space Race

Not only do you need space for all the new presents, but for all the yuletide stocks. Make room in the pantry and fridge for extra food supplies. Christmas is the perfect excuse to get rid of food past its expiry date. Maximise fridge space by using under shelf slide on bottle racks, square stackable containers and tailor made roll out fridge shelves. A great pantry space saver is the moveable tiered shelf which can increase space by 50%.

Make a list and check it twice

"But lists are so boring" I hear you say. What if you could make an interesting list which serves you and actually helps you achieve things? For a great interactive family list, use a whiteboard or butchers paper. Each family member records the jobs they need to do to be ready for Christmas. Include their name and a finish date. Lists are most useful when they have the desired finish date and a ‘backward timeline' listing any mini tasks to achieve the final goal. For women who create ‘to do' lists for their husbands - lawns mowed or sheds cleared (excuse the stereotyping!) - get creative with list location. Fabric marker and something from your top drawer might work?!

Set and Forget

Do anything that can be done now. November's not too early to prepare the guest room and forget about it until they arrive. Schedule e-cards to be sent. Shop for gifts online and even have presents sent directly to the receiver. Book the cleaner, gardener, hairdresser or anyone else you are going to need close to the time. Starting today, schedule in 20 minutes daily to focus on preparing for your Christmas. You'll be ready in no time and it may even be your most organised Christmas yet!
