More than half of New Years' resolutions are broken within weeks of being created. What's the problem? Lack of time, space, money, energy, focus, or all of the above? Sometimes we subconsciously create blocks to disguise an inner fear of failure, or even fear of success. Feeling overwhelmed and not knowing where to start can impede progress. But don't be discouraged, there is a solution.....
The secret is in being organised. A lack of organisation is the fundamental reason underlying 99% of failure to achieve goals. Start with these easy steps to achieve all that you want in 2008:
1. Get Organised
Give yourself sufficient time, space and energy to put toward achieving your goals.
Being organised allows you the space to see the bigger picture, recognise where you are and identify what you want. Review each area of your life. Be honest about which areas can be better organised to create more time, space and energy for your goals.
2. Know what you want
Be specific, clearly define your goal and paint as much detail as possible.
Better than "I'd like to lose some weight" is "On 30 July 2008 I will weigh X kgs". Ensure each goal
has a date, a verb and is framed in the positive: "By 18th June 2008 I will own a Ford Mondeo XR5 Turbo Hatch"
3. Write it down
Give your goals energy by writing them down and telling other people.
A visual cue is stronger than an idea in your head. Be creative - make a collage of what you want, write it in a special goals diary, paint a picture or use goal-setting software. Position your written goal where you see it every day at a time when you are relaxed.
4. Divide and conquer
Dividing your goals into realistic ‘mini goals' greatly increases the chance of achieving them.
Organisation, planning and timeframes are needed. To give your goal a time frame, start with the date you want it completed and work backwards to determine the 'mini goals' you need to do each week.
5. Team Up.
You don't have to do it alone. Find a ‘goal buddy', a friend or family member who also wants to get organised and achieve a goal. Your goals don't need to be the same. Make dates with each other to check on progress. Make promises to each other to achieve your mini goals. Being accountable to someone else is an incredibly powerful tool.
6. Celebrate
Celebrate as you achieve each ‘mini goal'. Reward yourself. Tell friends and family what you have achieved. Cross it off your list or give it a tick. Acknowledging what you have done will inspire you to do more. Celebrating your goals has a very powerful snowball effect. Start now. Get organised to achieve your goals and make 2008 your best year yet!
