Get Your Garage In Order
One of the most overlooked spaces in any home is the garage. In our rush to get in and out, it can easily become neglected or even worse, a dumping ground. Decide on the purpose of your garage and set it up appropriately. Ideally it is for vehicles only, but modern life often necessitates a multi-purpose garage. Use these top storage tips to best utilize your garage:

Pegboarding
Some very modern looking peg-boarding options are available these days. It’s main advantage is flexibility, as hooks and shelving can be moved as needs change. Ensure the board is well secured to the wall to avoid heavy items bringing the whole lot down.

Shelving
High wall mounted shelving is great above the car, to house chemicals and other nasties you want to keep away from the kids. Group like items and keep in medium sized containers to avoid messy shelves.

Netting
Suspended from the ceiling or rigged up vertically on a wall, an old hammock or fishing net is perfect for large but light sporting items, balls and pool toys.

Hooks
Think big; bikes, tools, ladders and outdoor chairs can all be suspended on specifically designed wall or ceiling hooks. Ensure ample space below, above and around each item. Place heavy items low, lighter items up high.

A Word About Boxes......
Our tropical climate is not conducive to using cardboard boxes in the garage. If you are using boxes for garage storage (please don’t let paperwork be inside!!), use good quality plastic boxes with well fitting lids. Great for snorkelling or camping equipment. Don’t overstuff boxes or make them too heavy to lift. And remember most things left long enough in a box will perish!

Garage DOs

  1. Clear the floor. You need ample space to open car doors, get shopping, kids and yourself in and out easily and safely. Don’t make life difficult by forcing yourself and your family to step over things.
  2. Have adequate lighting inside and out. Well placed strong lights are best inside and automated motion sensitive lights are great for the driveway approach.
  3. Treat your garage as part of your house. Keep it clean, safe, uncluttered and useful.

Garage DON’Ts

  1. Store stuff you’ve ‘cleaned out’ from your house. (do you really need it?)
  2. Use low quality or makeshift shelving especially high up. It can be dangerous
  3. Let it get out of hand. Set aside 30 minutes weekly to purge, clean up and ensure you are on track
