Tired of losing the remote, tripping over things, late charges for videos and never finding that magazine you just bought? Organisation is the answer. You can’t imagine how much time, energy and money (yes money) you will save when you are better organised. Not to mention stress! Make chilling out in front of your favourite DVD even more relaxing by following these basic guidelines.......
Cull
Yes – you’ve heard it before. When you do it, you will experience less stress, guilt and anxiety! Clear out the clutter: get rid of any broken, warped, unused items from your media room. As for any room in the house the rule is to keep only things in that room that you use there. If you find clothes or other things creeping into your media/tv room, keep a box by the door to round them up. Clear the box regularly.
Group
Keep similar things together. Take this principle as far as you like; From making sure all books are kept on a bookshelf to coding your DVDs into alphabetical order. Whatever works for you – but make sure things are grouped. Grouping will give your whole family quick and easy access and save you money by avoiding duplicate purchases.
TIP – Keep rental DVDs in a clear plastic box on top of the TV or in another highly visible spot. This separates them from your own DVDs, keeps them together, helps you transport them and acts a visual cue for returning them!
Containerise
Containers are your friend! Keeping your possessions in the right containers will make your life so much easier. In the media room use a remote control caddy which holds all your remotes. This can even be attached to your favourite armchair. Use journal boxes for magazines, plastic lidded boxes for extra play station bits or things that aren’t used every day.
TIP: Always buy containers at the end of a culling/ organising session. This enables you to choose the right style and quantity. Also ensures your containers don’t become clutter!
DoubleUp
Wherever space is an issue dual purpose furniture can make all the difference. To maximise space select items such as; a lounge with drawers underneath, coffee table with shelves or at least moveable glass that can showcase photos and treasured pictures. Ensure wall units have all the nooks and crannies you need. Work out what you need first, THEN go furniture shopping.
TIP: Take a video or DVD with you when furniture/storage shopping. This allows you to easily see if the furniture that looks so wonderful will also do its job properly!
